December 20, 2009... a bit more

Wishing my mother a Happy Birthday!!! We wish we were with you to celebrate!

Today we walked to the Pedestrian Street. It was a little warmer, about 30 degrees instead of 0. We walked past several McDonalds, KFC, and we saw a Starbucks. We walked down a little side road and saw something like a street fair, similar to Bele Chere in Asheville. We were told what was safe and what was not safe. The first vendor sold fried scorpions! Would you believe Kevin ate them? The pictures prove it! He said it was crunchy and had no taste!

They also had strawberries on a stick that were dipped in sugar - wonderful! And they sold Yak milk. We were told Ella was used to drinking it so we got her some! She loved it!

Next we boarded the van to see the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube from the Olympics last year. Fortunately, we were able to get closer and learn more of the history behind the buildings. On the way, Ella got awfully quiet and pale again. I assumed she was feeling sick. Teresa asked her for us if she was feeling like she was going to throw up. She said no, but continued to moan and groan. All of a sudden, I knew it was coming and grabbed the toboggan off her head so she could throw up in it. She did. Later Teresa told me that Ella told here she waited to throw up because she was afraid I might scold her....

  2. Way to go Kevin with the scorpions! We are so impressed!! We walked down the street near the Wangfujing at night with all the folk snacks both times in China, but none of us could ever bring ourselves to eat anything. Yikes.
Sad for Ella with the throwing up. I bet you are looking forward to her getting to know all of you soon and know that this momma will not scold her for such things. What an amazing girl with her ability to communicate.
